onemoreday: (you can tell by the way I use my walk)

(no subject)

Who: Flynn and anyone else
What: When you haven't really dreamed in centuries, it can be a bit overwhelming
When: After Fourth Wall
Where: Traverse Town, first district
Warnings: none

It's bright, so bright.

What is this?

There's colour and sound, and for a moment Flynn blinks, staggering just slightly, a hand reaching out for something that's not there. When he opens his eyes he has to reach up to wipe away tears with his sleeve, blinking blearily as he attempts to take in what's going on.

He's sleeping, but this isn't like any dream he's had in ages.

He moves, slowly, testing his gait, testing where he's found himself. Reaching out, fingers brushing against a wall. There's no prickle of static, of a circuit completed. No panel, no godly connection to the world around him. Solid wall. He runs his fingers up the wall, feeling the cracks and rough surface. It feels so real it's startling.

He turns to look around again, scanning things critically. His eyes aren't watering quite as much, though he has to squint a little due to how brightly lit everything is. It's that orange-yellow of incandescent bulbs, a light wavelength that he's so completely unused to anymore...

Is this a dream? Would it be affecting him this much?

But where else would he be?

He begins to walk again, carefully fielding stairs, using his hands to seek out rails and walls while his vision attempts to adjust to this place. It's nothing like the blue-and-black reality of the Grid, or even the small amount of creature comfort he made for himself. It's... alive in the physical sense, not in the digital sense...

"Didn't think I had any dreams like this left in me," he says to no one in particular, managing a quiet laugh. "Better enjoy it while it lasts!"

And he continues patiently up the stairs, waiting to see what else this dream can do.

"Wait until you discover that you can sleep in this dreams, and have dreams within your dreaming sleep," Celestia returned with a smile. "Yes, I'm afraid this is a very complicated situation, affecting many of us here."

"Something is very definitely amiss, and I wouldn't describe it as perfectly happy. We do have Nightmares to worry about -- the hostile counterparts of our Spirits," she said with a nod to Hero. "And we most certainly have a purpose here, of one sort or another."

"If not us, than the Spirits who are our allies are willing combatants against the Nightmares." She brushed Hero fondly with a few primary feathers at that, making the Thunderaffe swell with obvious pride. "But not all the people who have come here are able to fight. In fact, we are not certain what the criteria are for falling into the dream worlds."

"You might be very surprised at how much effort goes into making that true," Celestia said with clear amusement. After all the work and time she had put into grooming Twilight Sparkle for her role in modern Equestria, Celestia doubted it was ever as simple as it seemed on the surface, no matter what the stories.

"True character only shows in the depths of adversity," Celestia said by way of agreement to the only part of that she was certain she understood entirely. "I suppose we in turn are being tested. It would certainly explain much."

"At the moment, we are planning the downfall of a particularly powerful Nightmare." Celestia glanced skywards, though the Spellican didn't conveniently fly by at that moment. "It has sealed the worlds beyond this one, which has prevented many of us from going about our business. However, some people have opened businesses here, or found ways to pursue different vocations."

Celestia laughed a little, a small bright noise that she immediately covered by a smile. "I'm sorry, but I'm afraid you'll find age to be no excuse."

"Old mares, in fact, but I could probably persuade my sister to make an exception in your case," she said with a soft laugh. "Truth be told, we all are doing what we can, although there is not a great deal of organization to it since we do not exactly have a great deal of opposition to organize against."
