What: The portals are closed. Everyone's in Traverse Town, including a whole bunch of new people. This should be interesting.

You didn't expect to be here. You really didn't. The technicolor buildings are a surprise, as is the little white flying bear telling you you're in the dream world. He gives you a bag full of what looks to be currency, enough shiny things to create a creature of your own (or so he says), and sends you on your way.

"It's not going to eat you." Wash would've figured that would be obvious, given the size of the bat versus the size of the incredibly skittish teen, but there was no accounting for some people. "Yeah, that's pretty normal for the bats. You're stuck with it, so you might as well get used to it."

So the bats like physical contact which Ivan isn't comfortable with... This is going to take a lot of getting used to. Ivan raises his hand to attempt a pet. The bat happily nuzzles into his palm, squeaking all the while. Hello friend! Your hair is really soft like my fur.

What has Ivan gotten himself into? This has to be a really weird dream brought about eating too many Japanese snacks late at night while watching anime...

He gets more respect from a random teenager than he does from members of his own team. Go figure. Wash removes a cookie from his armor's storage compartment and tosses it to the teen. "Give this to him."

On Wash's shoulder, Fang squeaked and leaned against Wash's helmet. Cookies! Can he have one pleasepleaseplease? Wash sighed and fished out another cookie, rolling his eyes as Fang chomped down on it. "Greedy little beach ball."

Ivan catches the cookie tossed to him with only a little fumbling. And that's when something clicks in his mind.

He doesn't have time for a pet! He can't take a bat with him while he's at his job. It would have to be stuck alone in his small apartment, and even when Ivan comes back from work, he'll be so tired. He won't be able to give it the attention it needs. And he neighbors are probably going to complain because it'll probably squeak a lot because it's lonely... The poor thing deserves so much better than him.

"How do you do it? I mean, if you're a hero, how do you also have time for a pet? For two of them?"

Well, Mr. Sky High does, but at the same time, he's Mr. Sky High.

Just when he'd thought things were clicking into place. Evidently the kid picked up far less from the Moogle than Wash had thought. "Okay, one, this is a dream. You're stuck here until further notice, along with the rest of us. Two, they're more allies than pets. Three, if I'm a what?"
