Dreaming Wide Awake [Fourth Wall/Open]

Who: Everyone! Current characters, fourth wall characters, whoever wants to show up.
What: The portals are closed. Everyone's in Traverse Town, including a whole bunch of new people. This should be interesting.
Where: Traverse Town
When: Throughout the day
Warnings: Depends on the characters. Expect language at least.

You didn't expect to be here. You really didn't. The technicolor buildings are a surprise, as is the little white flying bear telling you you're in the dream world. He gives you a bag full of what looks to be currency, enough shiny things to create a creature of your own (or so he says), and sends you on your way.

Souji stopped, blinking. Toshi ran into the back of his ankles and began chirruping in annoyance, and he crouched to scoop the little Pricklemane up, still staring. It was rude to stare, of course, but... what was that? He'd seen humans, and oddly colored horses, but was she some kind of tanuki?

In a dress?

He was staring. He looked down, hurriedly, then back up with a smile quickly pasted on. "Good afternoon!"

She hadn't eve noticed the staring, too lost in her own thoughts. When the words were spoken, though, she glanced over and realized who was addressing her. Despite the strange circumstances, one must always be polite. So she nodded, hands together, returning the cordial greeting.

"Good afternoon... I don't suppose you could tell me where I am?"

Well, if she was a tanuki, Souji thought, then all the stories suggested the safest path was to stay polite. (And take her off the fire, if she happened to change into a teapot.)

"They call the city Traverse Town," he said, tucking his hands behind his back. "But I don't know if that will help! I'd certainly never heard of such a place."

"So it really is Traverse Town." She murmured, more to herself than as a reply. She frowned for a moment before talking to Souji again, now directly. "In that case, have you seen a young boy named Sora? He's a human, like you, with spiky brown hair... Or perhaps a duck named Donald? A dog named Goofy?"

She was also tempted to ask if Souji had seen an incredibly handsome, dashing young mouse named Mickey, but that was probably pushing her luck.

"Sora? Does he have blue eyes? I did see -- well, I saw pictures of a boy with that name!" And it couldn't be too common as a boy's name. As a girl's, maybe a little more so.

"But we didn't speak," he added with a smile, "so I'm not entirely sure where he might have gone to. Do you know this place? Have you dreamed of it before, I mean?"

"I've never been here before." She explained, slightly brighter now that she knew Sora was here, in some shape or form. "But I know of others who have... including that Sora, who has the bluest eyes." She smiled, nodding once. "I'm sure he must be around somewhere. He's a good friend of mine, and he's helped me out of situations like this before."

A pause. "... Well, not like this... this is much calmer."

Souji laughs, and crouches for a moment to scoop Toshi into the crook of his arm as the Pricklemane grumbles about his divided attention. "That's interesting! In dreams, or in reality? I know another boy, Riku, told me he had been here in the waking world before ever visiting in a dream.

"It's hard for me to believe that a place like this could exist outside of a strange dream, but I've only seen a small part of the world, after all."

"Riku too?" She beamed, as the good news piled on top of good news. "Maybe the others are here too... "

But she'd have to find that out for herself. Best to answer this nice young man's question. "It's a bit of a long tale, but those boys were heroes of their own stories, stories that were told to me. I've never even left my own world before. So... I'm really confused how I got here, dream or otherwise."

"Oh, you know him, too? I know he's here! It wasn't long ago at all that he arrived... so he must be here with the rest of us," Souji said, glancing around. Riku might not be anywhere he could see, but the town was a big one. "But it's not just heroes who come here, you know. And not just people who've been to another world!

"I had never left my own country, much less my world."

"Well... It seems we know everyone but each other." That wouldn't do at all.

She grabbed the sides of her dress, and curtsied. "My name is Queen Minnie Mouse, of the Disney Kingdom. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance."

"And I'm Soujirou." He bowed, deeply. A Queen? "I'm honored to meet you, your majesty."

Queen of a kingdom he'd never heard of, but then, she was from another world, and not human, either.

Now, with that over, it was back to business. "I may not understand everything that's going on, but I will do my best to help. If Sora and Riku are here, things can't be too bad off. They're excellent heroes."

Souji knows it's hardly fair to the boys to feel as skeptical as he does at that praise, but "heroes"... he doesn't think he believes in heroes.

"It's a strange place," he said, "but I don't think there will be any danger we can't face, your majesty! Of course the first problem will be to discover just why we have come here. There should be a ... a door between worlds near the fountain."

"Then I think we should make that our first destination." She decided right then and there, and started to walk, expecting Souji as if he were another citizen of her kingdom. "All doors lead somewhere, and I should hope my world is one of them."

"Maybe!" Souji said, and set off after her. "It's through that set of doors, and across the plaza beyond. I've heard it leads to more worlds than the ones I've yet seen... but not mine, or so I hear."

With a laugh, he added, "But we all wake up sooner or later, so there's no reason to worry about that, is there? It would only be a dream of home if it did!"

"If only things could be that simple." Minnie sighed as they walked, going through her recent memories. "I don't know how much Sora and Riku have told you, but even dreams can have their dangers. If you get lost inside of them, you may never be able to wake up. And there are cruel people out there who would take advantage of this power... which is why I worry."

It sucked being the bearer of bad news, but she felt it was her duty to issue out the warnings.

Souji cast her a sidelong glance through the hair that fell along the side of his face, silent for a long moment. His voice, when he spoke, remained light and cheerful.

"I've heard that there is a man who sometimes addresses us using these little devices--" He looked down, tugging his communicator free of where he'd tucked it in the front of his obi and displaying it to her. "And acts as though he has some kind of power over this place... although I haven't yet seen him. I haven't been here long!"

She wasn't too surprised. Whenever there was trouble, a villain was always behind it. Yet it didn't bother her too much either - villains always lost to the forces of good. It was simply a matter of time. "I may have a few ideas who it might be... but I can't say for certain. And I wouldn't be too sure on how to defeat them, either."

She shook her head, disappointed at her own weakness. "I'm afraid fighting and strategy aren't exactly my strong points..."

"Please, don't worry about that!" He tucked his hair behind his ear and smiled. "Aren't those heroes you spoke of here, after all?

"I don't know much about it myself," he added, with a frown, and pushed the heavy door open, stepping into the second district. "But first, let's look at that portal, hmm? -- And I'm afraid, your majesty, that if you're not a fighter you may want to keep someone who is with you outside in this town! The Dream Eaters can be very dangerous."

Dream Eaters, yes that rang a note somewhere. If only she had asked for more details back then! She would have to find Sora and Riku, and fast. There was only so much magic she could use before she found herself defenseless.

"Yes, you're right... we should focus on just one thing at a time. First the portal, then my companions."

"Besides, it's easy to find other people here!" Souji said, and picked up the pace a little. Dream Eaters did often appear here, after all. "You just have to use those devices."

He tucked his back into his obi, resting his hand carefully near the cudgel he'd replaced his sword with. It shouldn't be too long before he'd saved up enough for one from a moogle. He wasn't sure exactly how much this money was worth, but he had the feeling the price he'd been quoted was a little high....
