While the lessons with the Princesses had gone well, North still felt under prepared. The basics were one thing, but fighting nightmares was another and he was going to need a lot more practice before he could even think about taking them on. His spirits were determined, but North didn't want to rely on them for everything.

He'd set up a few crude targets around the Apple family farm, and collected a few rocks as well, the goal being to turn them into projectiles, and see how effective they were before he started playing around with the slingshot. It wasn't the most effective weapon, but hopefully, it would work. He did better with distance anyway.

Theta stood nearby with his own target and rocks, trying to get the slingshot to work. He was having trouble retaining the tension of the elastic with his little arms. But he was getting better.

"It wouldn't hurt to try right? I mean, I can't really make holograms like this." He slumps, unconsciously. He's also been having trouble using a slingshot.

[shadearchivist]

"You shouldn't feel bad about it; different types of magic lend themselves to different skills. It does seem rather unfair that that form wouldn't allow you illusion magic." The mark on Ienzo's flank looked like his Lexicon so if it was representative of the powers he had, then he should be able to make illusions.

[brodakota]

"Well, I'm also not a hologram anymore, so that probably has something to do with it." And it was surprisingly hard, to adjust to being an actual physical being. "Do you know if dragons can use magic? It would be a lot easier than a slingshot."

[shadearchivist]

"I would think that they do; most dragons seem to, but I'm not sure how you would use your particular abilities. It would be a question better directed at the princesses," Ienzo allowed. "Differing systems of magic can have different rules, after all."

[brodakota]

Theta nods, taking this all in. It would be a lot easier if he was still connected to North.

"Too many rules, it feels like."

There's a loud cracking sound and a sigh of relief. North has managed to land one of his targets in a way that's satisfactory. Now, hopefully he can do it again.

"Your practice seems to be coming along well," Ienzo commented to North. To Theta he added, "It's like any other skill; it just does seem to be too bad that you couldn't keep the abilities as you normally are."

[brodakota]

"Not exactly. That's the first time I've been able to manage launching those rocks like that. Now the really practice starts." Still, he'll turn and talk. He needs a bit of a break.

"Not unless I was a holographic dragon or something."

[shadearchivist]

"Are you trying to improve your fine magic skills?" Ienzo asked. Lifting things was easy; lifting a gun and shooting it might be harder but not impossible.

It was curious that Theta wasn't a hologram, actually. "Is being in that physical form very wearing for you, Theta?"

[brodakota]

"Sort of. I guess I'm just trying to make myself useful in a fight. It's a bit harder when you have four legs," North said, "I'm trying to see if I can launch the rocks really fast, sort of like a magic gun, without the gun part."

Life's tough when you don't have fingers.

"It's weird, if that's what you mean," Theta replied with a shrug. "But I'm getting used to it."

"It would probably take a while to learn the control necessary to fire a gun with your telekinesis. That's too bad," Ienzo remarked to North.

"If I can help you get used to it, please don't hesitate to ask," Ienzo added to Theta. Though hopefully they wouldn't be in this state long enough for that to be a necessity.

[brodakota]

"Well, I have the time, for now. But I'd rather not be defenseless while I'm learning that part."

Theta nodded. As long as they could keep going back to the regular worlds, he should be fine. Especially if he stuck close to North.

[shadearchivist]

"Is there any way I can help you with it, North?" Ienzo asked. Picking things up seemed most similar to gravity spells, though it wasn't quite the same. It reminded him more of Merlin's magics, which were of course different to the primary elemental ones to some extent.

[brodakota]

North looked thoughtful for a moment.

"I'm not sure. I'm still learning pony magic and most of what I thought up for training is sort of for one person....unless you have advice on how to use the magic. I'm getting the basics, but that's about as far as I can manage."

[shadearchivist]

"Since I'm not as familiar with pony magic, I'm afraid there isn't much. The only thing that I can think of that might be harder to keep in mind if you haven't used magic before is that using it tires you out like any other activity you might do. It's easy to overextend yourself as you start learning, so it's something to watch out for," Ienzo explained.

[brodakota]

North nods. He supposes that he has been pushing himself a little, a way to deal with everything that's been going on.

"Yeah, using magic does take a lot more focus than anything else I've had to do."

[shadearchivist]

Ienzo nodded. "That's to be expected. On a basic level, what you're doing with the rocks is imposing your will on the reality of the world around you."

[brodakota]

"I'm usually the one being imposed on." It's said with a laugh. He's a soldier, he takes orders, or deals with his friend's shenanigans. "But that's a good way to think about it. At least the rocks seem to listen."

[shadearchivist]

"It's true of many things that people do," Ienzo said. "Magic just tends to be more direct about it."

"No kidding," North said. "So how have you been, Ienzo? Getting used to being a pony?"

"Mostly. It's less difficult for us, I think, than for people who gained wings. Transformation magic isn't particularly my favorite," Ienzo admitted, making a face. "It's necessary sometimes, I suppose."

"Yeah. York's become a terror with his. More than usual anyway."

Although, hopefully the other freelancer had seen some improvement.

"Have you been to many worlds that make you transform?"

[shadearchivist]

"Not terribly many, no," Ienzo said. "They aren't that common."

[brodakota]

"This is just one of the exceptions then. Do I want to know what to expect from some of the others?"

Just in case they showed up here, though North was somewhat hopeful that they wouldn't. He didn't want to have to adjust to a whole new form again.

[shadearchivist]

"Hm...well, if we arrive on an underwater world, the transformation should be instantaneous, in order to allow you to breathe. Unless of course you're simply allowed to breathe underwater there. It can be complicated." Ienzo hadn't had to go on missions to worlds such as that himself, but they were out there.

[brodakota]

"So what your saying is that we could all become fish in the next world?" North asked. "Or at least, it's a possibility?"

One animal transformation under his belt is enough for him, thank you.
